SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea's state-run gas company plans to invest EnCana about $1.1 billion over the next five years in natural gas fields in Canada, news reports said Monday.

The Korea Gas Corp. signed a contract with energy company EnCana Corp.( ECA ) last week to jointly develop and operate three natural gas fields in British Columbia, the mass circulation Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported.

KOGAS acquired a 50 percent stake in the gas fields, the report said. KOGAS plans to start extracting natural gas from the fields in 2017 after exploration and test production, the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper said.

Calls to the gas company went unanswered on Monday, a national holiday in South Korea.

Gas-hungry Asia is making a major push into one of Canada's most promising energy frontiers, with a billion-dollar investment by a South Korean company that boosts British Columbia's efforts to become a natural gas export hub.

The deal announced yesterday by Korea Gas Corp. also sets the stage for more KOGAS foreign interest in Canada's natural gas resources, which have struggled under low commodity prices but still form a huge reserve basin that other countries covet.

Korea Gas plans to spend $1.1-billion over the next five years to bring gas to the surface from a huge patch of land that is owned by EnCana Corp. of Calgary.

The company expects to extract a trillion cubic feet of gas from the area, which lies in the lucrative gas fields of B.C.'s north-east corner.

That's nearly enough to feed South Korea's demand for a full year.
